About The Cruciball

Currently, The Cruciball is in a closed beta. The game is primarily feature-complete, but additional polish and finishing touches are necessary before a full release. The game is expected to be available for purchase by the public in late 2024.

System and Setup Requirements:

The Cruciball works best with a dedicated setup, including a ceiling-mounted projector and recessed cameras. However, it can be brought anywhere with just a laptop, projector, and a pair of tripods for the cameras. In fact, the game was developed entirely using a mobile setup with the projector on the floor, demonstrating that any setup can work just as well.

Tracking Cameras

For optimal performance, it is recommended to use high-speed color webcams. While 90fps is the bare minimum, 120fps is preferred for more accurate tracking. Low frames rates are more likely to result in missed throws and tracking inaccuracies. At lower frame rates a lot of accuracy can be lost on fast moving balls, as the ball can bounce off the wall in less time than a single frame.

Projector and Environment

A projector and a flat wall surface to project onto are also required. It is recommended that your projector has at least 2500 lumens (lm) to ensure it is bright enough for a large surface and has low latency (20ms or less) to avoid significant input lag. Additionally, it is highly recommended to have some kind of enclosure to protect your projector, whether it be a ceiling cage or a box on the floor. Cable ramps or recessed cables are also highly recommended to maintain a safe and hazard free setup.

Projector:

Options:

    [BenqQ TH575]. ~$750. Strongly recommended. 3800 lumens. 1080p at 60fps with 16ms latency.
    [BenQ TK700STi]. ~$1500. Recommended for 4K. 3000 lumens. 4K at 60fps with 16ms latency, or 1080p at 240fps with 4ms latency.

Requirements:

    - Ideally should be ceiling mounted in a protected cage.
    - At least 3000 lumens for bright projection.
    - Low latency highly recommended (< 20ms).
    - 1080p recommended.

2 Cameras:

Options:

    [ELP-USBFHD08S-L36]. ~$100. Strongly recommended. 120fps at 720p, or 60fps at 1080p. Web-camera module without built-in case.
    [IF-USBFHD08S-MFV]. ~$200. Recommended. 120fps at 720p, or 60fps at 1080p. Has built-in case and zoom lens.

Requirements:

    - Ideally should be wall-recessed or wall-mounted.
    - 120 frames per second Highly Recommended (at < 90fps a lot of accuracy is lost for fast moving balls).
    - 720p Recommended.

Wall Surface:

Options:

Unfortunately we are unable to provide you with a wall. Thankfully, The Cruciball is very adaptable to almost any location and calibration is very quick. You will have to use a wall in your basement, at your gym, in a spare room, in your garage, etc..

Requirements:

    - Should be blank for a clear projection.
    - Must be able to withstand balls being thrown at it.
